Filing a Complaint

The  goal of the SGSC Police Department is to improve the quality of services provided, to promote public confidence, and to enhance and maintain the professional integrity of this department and its members.  The department has established and promoted these standards through clear, written policy statements, rules and regulations, and through the thorough and impartial investigation of all allegations of misconduct or complaints regarding the directives of the department.

A procedure to receive, document and investigate all citizen complaints allows the department to monitor and enforce standards.  It is the policy of the department to accept, document, review, and investigate all instances of alleged misconduct. The focus of these investigations is to determine whether the allegations are valid or invalid and to take appropriate action. All allegations of misconduct will be investigated and any citizen, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or nationality, who witnesses or has knowledge of employee misconduct, may file a complaint.

Informal Complaints

The goal of the Informal complaint process is to attempt to reach a resolution to the complaint that is acceptable to both the complainant(s) and the respondent(s). Informal procedures are for quick problem solving, Some informal solutions can be reached without staff even knowing a complaint has been made.  Others require that the department attempt to facilitate a mutually acceptable resolution through the use of conflict resolution techniques. In the mediation process, we will only speak to those people whose involvement is necessary to facilitate a resolution to a complaint. Frequently, this includes only the complainant(s) and respondent(s).

Informal action is usually appropriate when
•the allegations are not violations of law or departmental policy
•there is a chance of quickly stopping the problem before it develops
•the staff involved are likely to have an ongoing working relationship with the complainant

The complaint must be returned to the Chief of Police located in Tiger Village 1.

Formal Complaints

A formal complaint may filed for actions which are in violation of state or federal law or violations of departmental policies or procedures.

The department views all citizen complaints against its employees very seriously and actively pursues investigations into misconduct. For this reason, you must ensure your complaint is based on fact. False reporting in an attempt to unjustly subject an police to underserved discipline, slander, or place his/her employment in jeopardy can result in criminal charges and/or a civil suit by the involved employee.
