General Financial Aid Information
Verification – SGSC has partnered with CampusLogic to help our students complete the verification process. Should you be chosen for verification, you will receive an email from SGSC (finaid@sgsc.edu) notifying you to create an account in SGSC's new online document collection system at Verify My FAFSA.

Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally (HOPE) and Zell Miller Scholarships are funded by the Georgia Lottery for Education. HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships are available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement. For eligible students, HOPE pays a portion of tuition and Zell Miller pays 100% of tuition. HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships are awarded at South Georgia State College based upon the assumption of full-time enrollment and is adjusted based on the student's actual class schedule. Dropping a Class
A student who drops classes during the drop add period may be awarded an adjusted amount of Pell, HOPE or other type financial aid. The student’s aid will adjust to the number of hours the student is enrolled in at the end of the drop/add period.
Withdrawing from all Courses
A student who withdraws from all courses during the semester may be required to repay a portion of financial aid they received. A calculation is completed and depending on the percentage of the entire semester the student attended a portion of unearned tuition will be returned to the DOE by the institution. The student may be required to return funds as well. Individual factors determine whether or not the student will owe a refund. More often than not the student will not be required to repay any Pell funds but there are cases in which they do.
Withdrawing from a single course or less than 100% of the student’s courses will not result in a refund and neither the institution nor the student will be required to return any financial aid funds. However not beginning a “B” term course will effect amounts awarded and possible returning of funds already received.
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
3 Factors of SAP:
- Pace – a quantitative measure – must be passing at least 2/3 of all attempted hours (66.67%)
- All students are expected to maintain the academic standards outlined in the academic progress chart below. Any student who fails to meet the minimum cumulative GPA required for hours attempted will be placed on financial aid warning the first term of not making satisfactory progress for GPA, but will continue to be eligible for financial aid. After a subsequent period of enrollment, those students who were previously placed on financial aid warning and continue not to meet the required GPA will be placed on Financial Aid Suspension (Probation) and no longer will be eligible for financial aid assistance.

The main Federal Grant program is the Pell Grant.

How To Apply
Grants are awarded based on financial need. Grants are gift-aid and do not need to be repaid unless you withdraw from classes or receive grant money you are not eligible to receive. Grants are not available to students with a prior bachelor's degree. Apply for grants by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. No additional application is necessary.
Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is the main federal grant program. For the 2022-2023 school year, students with EFCs of 6207or less may qualify for Pell Grant funds. The Pell Grant amount is determined by the Expected Family Contribution calculated by the FAFSA processor and the student's enrollment status. For the 2022-2023 school year, annual Pell Grant awards range from $692 to $6895. Initial Pell Grant offers are based on the Full Time enrollment status of 12 semester hours or more and are adjusted based on the student's actual class schedule and academic load.
Students enrolled 3/4 Time normally receive 75% of their Full Time award amount. Students enrolled 1/2 Time normally receive 50% of their award amount. Students enrolled less than 1/2 Time normally receive 25% of their award amount.
During Summer Semester, most students are requried to enrolled for 6 hours or more to receive a Pell Grant payment.
Federal SEOG Grant (Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant)
Eligibility for Federal SEOG Grant is based on Pell Grant eligibility and exceptional financial need. Annual Federal SEOG Grant range from $500 to $1000 at South Georgia State College. Awards are made each semester based on available funding, and are awarded to students with the highest financial need. Priority is given to students who meet the deadline dates (May 1 for Fall, November 1 for Spring, and March 1 for Summer)

Direct Loans require the completion of the FAFSA application and the Institutional Data Sheet (and all other documentation for verification purposes if selected) and the Direct Loan Request form. A Master Promissory Note and Loan Entrance Counseling can be completed at www.studentaid.gov.
Direct Student Loans
Students enrolled at last half-time (6 hours) in programs eligible for federal aid may borrow low-interest Student Loans: 1) Subsidized - for students with financial need. The federal government pays the interest while the student is enrolled at least half-time and during the six-month grace period. For loans made after July 1, 2019, the interest rate on the Subsidized Student Loan is 4.53%, once the repayment period begins; 2) Unsubsidized - the student pays the interest while in school and during the six-month grace period, or requests that the interest be added to the balance of the loan. Direct Parent PLUS Loans
If you still need additional funds, after you have exhausted all other Federal and State financial aid, your parent can apply for a Direct Parent PLUS Loan. Additional information and instructions are available on the Direct Parent PLUS Loan Application.

Work study is awarded on a first come first serve basis. Normally we award all the work study funds available to us in the Fall. A student should drop by the financial aid office to inquire about Work Study posiitons and complete necessary paperwork and a job assignment. We have additional funds to award for students to begin Spring or Summer.
