SGSC to host “Go Back. Move Ahead.” Open House April 22-23

Posted on Apr 07, 2015

South Georgia State College (SGSC) will host a “Go Back. Move Ahead.” Open House April 22-23 to further encourage adult learners who have completed some college to return and finish their degrees.

The April 22 event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the commons area of Engram Hall on the Douglas Campus. The Waycross Campus event is scheduled for April 23 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. in the commons area of the James M. Dye Student Services Building.

“This open house will give adult learners a one-stop opportunity to meet with all of our departments – admissions, financial aid, career and academic counseling, disabilities, personal academic support, and tutoring,” said Susanne Gibson, coordinator of the Waycross Campus Advising Center who is also assisting SGSC with its “Go Back. Move Ahead.” efforts. “Students can also receive a campus tour to witness all of the great things that are happening at SGSC. If someone has been waiting for the right time to come back and finish his/her degree, this is it.”

Gibson serves as a personal guide for adult learners wishing to return to college.  She guides students through the re-enrollment process, assists with financial aid paperwork, and helps students determine the quickest route to completion.  She checks on each student’s progress at the start, midterm, and end of each semester and connects them to any resources they may need.

“I want students to know they truly matter here, and we want to help them find the quickest route to complete their college degrees,” said Gibson.

“Go Back. Move Ahead.” was launched in July 2014 as part of Governor Nathan Deal’s Complete College Georgia Initiative, which is helping the State fulfill the need for an additional 250,000 graduates by 2020. “Go Back. Move Ahead.” is a joint campaign between Governor Deal, the University System of Georgia, and the Technical College System of Georgia. The campaign’s focus is to encourage over one million adult learners in Georgia to complete their college degrees. That figure represents approximately 22 percent of the State’s population.
