SGSC’s Phi Theta Kappa Holds Induction Ceremony

South Georgia State College celebrated academic achievement as the Douglas Campus’ Kappa Sigma chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society held its spring induction ceremony.

"This induction is just the beginning of a student’s involvement with Phi Theta Kappa," said Amy Hancock, advisor for the local chapter. "We encourage our students to take advantage of the honor they have worked so hard to obtain and to use Phi Theta Kappa as the means to develop leadership and to be recognized on a local, state, and national level as high achievers."

The induction ceremony is held to acknowledge the achievement of Phi Theta Kappa members. It is also an introduction to family and friends of what the organization’s symbols and traditions mean. Phi Theta Kappa is composed of Greek words symbolizing wisdom, aspiration, and purity. A white rose is given to each member, symbolizing purity, beauty of life, and intellectual associations, while the oak and laurel leaves on the Phi Theta Kappa emblem represent stability, character, achievement, and success.

Each of the inductees recited the Oath of Membership to uphold the standards of Phi Theta Kappa and signed their name in the membership book. Chapter Co-Advisor Ame Wilkerson officially welcomed them into the society.

This year’s inductees include: Susana Rojas, Kelsey Lott, and Kenneth Nguyen of Douglas, GA, Mariana Guerrero and Antoni Piotrowiak of Nicholls, GA, Chantal Williams of Roswell, GA, and Danielle Sumner of Broxton, GA.

In its years of existence since the charter date in 1960, the college's Kappa Sigma Chapter has maintained its high standard of excellence and garnered a number of prestigious recognitions from Phi Theta Kappa, including the Five-Star ranking—the highest ranking a chapter can receive for excellence—and various awards at regional Phi Theta Kappa conferences. At the most recent event, the Kappa Sigma officer team received the Distinguished Officer Team award for its leadership to the chapter. It has also reached out to the community with service projects, such as assisting at Second Harvest food bank and collecting items for care packages to send to soldiers deployed overseas.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, Peru, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. Nearly 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 130,000 students inducted annually.
