SGSC’s Moore, Spencer, Jiles Receive GCAA All-Region Honors; Hawks Host GCAA Quarterfinal Tuesday

The Division I men’s basketball coaches of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) have selected three members of South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team for All-Region Honors. SGSC has also learned it will host a GCAA tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday night.

Jayce Moore, a 6’3” sophomore from Douglas, Ga., was named the Defensive Player of the Year. He was also a GCAA All-Region First Team selection and was named to the GCAA’s All-Defensive Team. Moore averaged 13.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game this season. He finished first in the GCAA in offensive rebounds (141) and steals (143) and was second in rebounds per game (9.8). Moore finished in the GCAA’s top five in these additional categories – defensive rebounds (154; 3rd), total rebounds (295; 2nd), and blocked shots (34; 5th).

AJ Spencer, a 6’4” sophomore from Shiloh, Ga., was a GCAA All-Region second team selection. Spencer averaged 14.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game this season. He finished in the GCAA’s top five in the following categories – offensive rebounds (74; 4th) and total points (436; 4th).

Nick Jiles, a 6’0” sophomore from Lakeland, Fla., was a GCAA All-Region Honorable Mention selection. Jiles averaged 12.9 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game this season. Jiles shot 81.0 percent from the free throw line, which placed him third in the GCAA.

The Hawks (22-8, 11-5) earned the third seed for the GCAA men’s basketball tournament and will host a quarterfinal game Tuesday night against the sixth seed Central Georgia Tech Titans. Tip for the Tuesday night game is set for 7 p.m., and general admission is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.

The tournament semifinals and championship game will be played at the highest remaining seed following the quarterfinal round. Georgia Highlands and South Georgia Tech earned the top two tournament seeds, respectively. The GCAA tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., in March.
