SGSC Hosts Science Olympiad

South Georgia State College was host to bright young scientific minds as it held the Regional Science Olympiad on March 7th, 2015. Middle school teams from Dooly County, Gatewood Middle School in Eatonton, Thomasville Scholars Academy, Thomas County, and Valwood School in Hahira competed to earn point in scientific events in order to become the big winner for the day and move onto the state level.

Gatewood Middle School was the big winner for the event, placing first overall and earning an invitation to the State Science Olympiad.

Students participated in written and critical thinking activities and labs, such as studying crustaceans like roly-polies, making meteorological predictions, finding the culprit of a whodunit by studying and analyzing the evidence presented.

The middle schoolers also had the opportunity to participate in mechanical and engineering activities by building and testing gliders powered by elastic, building and racing model cars, and testing the durability of their pre-made bridges and simple machines.

The big winner for the day was Gatewood Middle School, and earning first place overall means the team gets the honor of competing at the state-wide level. In second place was the Valwood Blue Team, followed by Thomasville Scholars in third, then Dooly County Team 1, Dooly County Team 2, Thomas County, and Valwood’s Orange Team.
