SGSC Hosts Middle School Science Olympiad

South Georgia State College was host to bright young scientific minds as it held the Regional Science Olympiad March 5. Middle school teams from Irwin County, Eight Street Middle School (Tifton, Ga.), Thomas County, Thomasville Scholars Academy, and Valwood (Hahira, Ga.) competed to earn points in scientific events in order to become the big winner for the day and move onto the state competition.

The top prize for the day went to Eighth Street Middle School. Earning first place overall means Eighth Street Middle School gets the honor of competing at the statewide Olympiad. In second place was Thomasville Scholars Academy Team 1, followed by Thomas County Middle School in third.

Students participated in written and critical thinking activities and labs, such as studying crustaceans like roly-polies, making meteorological predictions, and finding the culprit of a whodunit by studying and analyzing the evidence presented.

The middle schoolers also had the opportunity to participate in mechanical and engineering activities by building and testing gliders powered by elastic, building and racing model cars, and testing the durability of their pre-made bridges and simple machines.

Congratulations to all the young scientific minds that competed in the day’s events.
