Holmes signs with Columbus State

DeAndre Holmes, a member of South Georgia State College’s men’s basketball team, has signed a letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga.

Holmes, a 6’1” sophomore from Concord, Ga., averaged 11.5 points per game for the Hawks during the 2013-2014 season.  He also shot 33 percent from the three-point line and is SGSC’s career leader in total number of three-point shots made.

Head coach Cory Baldwin said Holmes suffered a knee injury during the quarterfinals of the 2014 GCAA Basketball Tournament, which initially lowered Holmes’s chance of playing at the next level.

“I’m so happy for Dre.  I know a lot of schools dropped off after his injury and surgery,” said Baldwin.  “I think he will have plenty of motivation at Columbus State.”

Holmes said he is thankful for the opportunity to continue his career and for the foundation he received while at SGSC.

“Due to my circumstances, I honestly thought obtaining a four-year degree as a student-athlete was out of my reach,” Holmes said.  “My prayers were answered, and I think Columbus will be a great place for me.  I would like to thank the coaches at SGSC and Columbus for all they’ve done and for helping me move on to the next level.

“I would also like to thank the Waycross Campus faculty and staff, as well as my friends and family, for encouraging me throughout my recruiting process by reminding me that everything would work itself out,” Holmes continued.  “I will miss SGSC, the fans, and everyone in the community.”

Holmes is the fourth player from last season’s team to sign with a four-year college or university.  A total of 35 players have signed letters of intent to play at the next level since the basketball program began in 2009.
