Hawks Baseball Defeats Darton, Ultimately Falls at District Championship
Posted on May 18, 2015
The South Georgia State College Hawks baseball players’ hard work all season earned them not only a berth at the region tournament, where they finished in second place in the state, but also a slot in the district tournament for the first time in three years.
The East Central District Championship Tournament was held at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee, this past weekend and hosted the top two teams from Tennessee—Walters State and Chattanooga State Community College—and the top two teams from Georgia—Darton and South Georgia State.
SGSC’s first game was against Tennessee’s number one team, Walters State. The Hawks held strong for the first two innings, and kept the score tied at 0-0. In the third inning, the Walters State Senators pulled ahead and stayed there. The Hawks’ Chase Morris hit a homer over left field in the sixth inning, leading to the Hawks’ only run in the game. The Hawks fell 11-1, but were still in the running for a tournament title.
Game 2 for the Hawks was against Georgia’s number one team, Darton State College. Darton pulled ahead in the first inning with 4 runs scored while SGSC scored none. By the fifth inning, Darton was in the lead 7-0. In the sixth, SGSC found their second wind and scored four runs, enough to stay in the game. Darton answered by filling the bases, but the Hawks didn’t allow any runs. SGSC earned two more runs in the sixth, bringing the score to Darton 7, SGSC 6. In the top of the eighth inning, SGSC loaded the bases with only one out and scored two runs, putting the Hawks in the lead. Darton scored once more in the ninth, but fell to the Hawks. With a final score of 9-8, SGSC moved on in the tournament, and Darton went home.
Game 3 for South Georgia State was against Tennessee’s number two team, Chattanooga State. The game got off to a slow start for SGSC, as Chattanooga earned nine runs in the first inning. SGSC held them off for the next few innings, allowing no runs in the second or third, and only allowing one hit which scored in the fourth. Chattanooga scored two more in the fifth, bringing the score to 12-0. SGSC’s Aaron Moore scored the only run for the Hawks in the game, and with a final score of Chattanooga 12, SGSC 1, the Hawks baseball season was over.
South Georgia State College is very proud of the baseball players’ hard work, dedication, and accomplishments during the 2014-2015 season. Head Coach Jeff Timothy is very pleased with the way the season turned out. “It was a magnificent run. What a journey! Qualifying for the East Central District Championship Tournament is an honor in itself. I would like to thank the players, coaching staff, SGSC, and our fans and family as they have shown tremendous support during this season. I hope to continue this success for future seasons to come.”
