South Georgia State College has received approval to distribute the portion of the CARES Act funds that is intended to offer financial assistance to students. The Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Fiscal Affairs are working diligently to follow CARES Act guidelines and disburse the funds to students.

We will be sending more communications to eligible students that will notify them of the amount of CARES Act funds they have been awarded.  You will not have to apply for these funds, they will automatically be disbursed through your student account.

The CARES Act guidance states specifically that students who meet the following criteria are eligible:

  1. Students who have a completed a 2019-2020 FAFSA on file (If you do not have one on file you may fill out the 2019-2020 FAFSA by June 30, 2020 and notify the Office of Financial Aid)
  2.  Students who were enrolled in face-to-face classes for Spring term 2020

Students that are not eligible according to the guidelines issued by the Department of Education are:

  1. International Students
  2. Transient Students (Home institutions will issue those grants)
  3.  Dual Enrolled Students
  4.  Students that were enrolled 100% online before March 13, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has created significant economic hardships for many people in our country, including students at South Georgia State College and their families. We are pleased that we now have CARES Act funds to share with eligible SGSC students.

As part of the Federal CARES Act of 2020, the Federal government provided colleges and universities with funds to make direct payments to students to assist with expenses related to the impacts of COVID 19.  We are pleased to notify you that you have been awarded $800 from the Cares Act Emergency Relief Grant.

Due to the number of awards, it may take up to two weeks for the funds to be distributed to students.  We will distribute these funds to you as quickly as we can either by direct deposit, if you signed up for an electronic refund, or by paper check.
