Tyrone Sam Named NJCAA Second Team All-American

Posted on Apr 19, 2016

For the second year in a row, a South Georgia State College (SGSC) basketball player has been named to the NJCAA All-American Team.

Tyrone Sam, a 6’6” sophomore from Roswell, Ga., was a second team selection. He follows former teammate Jovante’ Spivey who was a first team selection last season.

“I am excited for Tyrone,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “This is awesome exposure for him and SGSC. Having back-to-back All-Americans is more than I could have imagined as a head coach.”

Sam credited his teammates and coaches for his success.

“My coaches and teammates pushed me all year to get better and to lead the team,” he said. “This is something the whole program should be proud of. Without my coaches and teammates, I’m not an All-American.”

Sam averaged 25.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game for the Hawks last season. He was named GCAA Player of the Year, first team All-GCAA, and GCAA Player of the Week on five separate occasions. His points-per-game average placed him third in the NJCAA.

As a result of his All-American selection, Sam will participate in the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Association All-Star Classic Game April 30 in Las Vegas, Nev.

“It’s exciting that Tyrone is not only considered one of the best players in the NJCAA but to also have the opportunity to travel to Vegas and play with the best,” said Baldwin.
