South Georgia State College hosts Science Olympiad

South Georgia State College (SGSC) recently hosted one of six Georgia Regional Science Olympiad tournaments. As the name implies, Science Olympiad is reminiscent of an academic track meet and consists of a variety of science, engineering and math events. Divided into Divisions B and C – middle and high schools, respectively – students compete in 23 age-related events.

After many months of practice and training, teams of up to 15 students representing their schools gather to compete for individual gold, silver and bronze medals. In the overall competition, the schools contend for first- through third-place trophies; whereas, fourth- and fifth-place schools receive plaques. First- and second-place schools are also presented an invitation to the state competition. Success at the state level will advance the winning schools to the nationals, which are being held this year in Orlando, Fla.

As has been the tradition over the last decade, SGSC hosted a Division B tournament.  Six middle schools and eight teams came from across Georgia to compete this year. The schools competing were McIntyre Park Scholars Academy of Thomasville (two teams), Valwood of Valdosta, Dooly Middle School, Gatewood Schools from Eatonton (two teams), South Effingham Middle School and Savannah STEM Academy. South Effingham Middle School placed first, and Gatewood Team One placed second, both earning invitations to the state tournament.  Third place went to Scholars Academy Team Gold. The “Rookie of the Year” went to Valwood, which placed fourth in its very first Science Olympiad. Dooly County earned fifth, followed by Gatewood Team Two, Savannah STEM Academy and Scholars Academy Team Red.
