SGSC rolls in GCAA semifinal, will play Georgia Highlands for tournament championship

Posted on Mar 06, 2015

The No. 18 South Georgia State College Hawks outscored the Atlanta Metro Trailblazers 42-17 in the second half Friday night en route to a 78-44 win in the GCAA semifinals.

Jovante’ Spivey led all scorers with 29 points.  Cody Helgeland had 10 points and four rebounds, while Daniel Peace finished with nine points, four rebounds, eight assists, and five steals.

“(Jovante’) Spivey came out on point tonight.  That was a big factor in helping us build a lead at halftime,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “The press really got us going in the second half, and the second half was also probably the best we have rebounded all year.”

The Hawks (27-5, 14-4) forced a total of 29 turnovers, most of which came in the second half.

Friday’s semifinal win sets up the biggest showdown of the season as the top seed Hawks square off against the second seed Georgia Highlands Chargers Saturday afternoon for the GCAA Conference Tournament Championship.  The Hawks defeated the Chargers 89-74 on Dec. 6 at home and edged the Chargers 59-58 Feb. 21 in Rome to clinch the regular season conference title.

“Georgia Highlands is a great team, and it’s hard to beat a great team three times in one season,” said Baldwin.  “I wish we could have played the title game tonight, but we’ll just have to be ready and be at our best tomorrow afternoon.”

Tip for Saturday’s championship game is set for 2 p.m. on SGSC’s Waycross Campus.  General admission will be $7, and no SGSC regular season basketball passes will be accepted.
