SGSC knocks off East Georgia in OT thriller

Posted on Feb 03, 2014

Ty Bull hit a short jumper with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and the South Georgia State College Hawks held on to defeat the East Georgia State College Bobcats Monday night, 81-78.  The win extended the Hawks (13-8, 6-5 GCAA) current winning streak to three games.

Jovante’ Spivey led the Hawks with 29 points, while DeAndre Holmes had 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Bull rounded out the top scorers with 16 points and four rebounds.

Leading 41-28 at halftime, SGSC extended its lead to as many as 19 points in the second half only to see East Georgia slowly chip away and eventually take the lead with about four minutes left in regulation.

“They (East Georgia) forced us to play wilder than we wanted to in the second half, which got us out of control,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “Our guys showed a lot of heart and kept battling even after they took the lead.”

The Hawks start a two-game road trip Saturday afternoon against South Georgia Tech and will travel to East Georgia for a Feb. 10 rematch.

The team will begin a four-game homestand Feb. 12 against Albany Tech.  Tip is set for 7 p.m.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
