SGSC Holds Off Gordon State

Posted on Jan 14, 2017

The South Georgia State College Hawks brought their conference record back to .500 Saturday afternoon with a 70-60 win over the Gordon State Highlanders.

The Hawks (13-3, 1-1) led the entire 40 minutes in a game that head coach Cory Baldwin described as physical.

“That was one of the most physical games we’ve played this season,” he said. “It was tough, but it was a true team win.”

O’Showen Williams led all scorers with 21 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Zaquavian Smith had 13 points, and McKinley Chambless finished with 10 points.

The Hawks lost their conference opener 87-81 at Central Georgia Tech Jan. 11. The original conference opener against Atlanta Metro was postponed due to the recent winter weather in the Atlanta area. That game will be rescheduled for February.

In the meantime, the Hawks will host East Georgia State Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. for Chamber Night. Members of the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce will be recognized at halftime of the game.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
