SGSC Hawks Top USC Salkehatchie

After six lead changes in Tuesday's baseball game, the South Georgia State College (SGSC) Hawks finally pulled out a 6-5 win over USC Salkehatchie - University of South Carolina. SGSC took the lead in the sixth inning and held on for the victory. The Hawks went up for good on an RBI single by Jared Crews, scoring Zack Rafuse.
It was a good day at the plate for SGSC’s Chandler Rogers. He went 2-3, drove in one, and scored two runs. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the sixth inning. Shawn Blue got the win in relief for SGSC. Blue pitched one-third of an inning and allowed no runs.
Salkehatchie’s Hernandez was charged with the loss. He lasted just 3 1/3 innings, walked one, struck out three, and allowed two runs.
USC Salkehatchie jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. USC Salkehatchie’s threat began with a double by Josh Litchfield. A single by Gavin Bishop then moved Litchfield from second to third. Mitchell Cobb singled, scoring Litchfield and Brody Gibson.
After a quick strike from USC Salkehatchie, SGSC responded with three runs in the second. The Hawks scored on an RBI double by Rogers, a sacrifice fly by Derek Paparella, and an RBI double by Rafuse.
The lead for SGSC continued after the sixth inning, as more runs came home on a sacrifice fly by Cameron Coffey. The Hawks were able to take a win in the first game.
In game two, USC Salkehatchie was not able to overcome the hole it dug itself into against SGSC, and USC Salkehatchie lost 3-2 to SGSC after falling behind by three runs in the second inning.
USC Salkehatchie scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Del Bianco in the third inning and a wild pitch in the fifth inning. USC Salkehatchie was not able to take the lead back.Mikal Flores got on base three times in the game for SGSC. He scored one run and had one RBI, after he homered in the first inning.
USC Salkehatchie’s lineup had no answer for Chip Devitt. They managed just one hit off of the SGSC pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out six during his four innings of work.
The game was never in doubt after the first, as the Hawks scored one run on the solo home run by Flores. SGSC piled on two more runs in the bottom of the second. A clutch sacrifice fly scored Chandler Rogers to open the scoring in the frame.
Game two ended with a win by SGSC as they head into a home game on Friday, February 19 against St. Johns River. The doubleheader begins at 3:00 pm. They travel to Palatka, FL to face St. Johns again on Saturday, February 20 with a game time of 2:00 pm.
