SGSC Hawks Swim Team Continues to Make Waves

Posted on Nov 24, 2014

South Georgia State College’s Swim Team travelled to Albany this past weekend to compete in the Darton Invitational swim meet against Birmingham Southern University and host team Darton. The Women’s Team placed second and the Men’s Team placed third. BSU won both the Men’s and the Women’s competition.

Leading the Women’s Team were sophomores Bonnie Brown (Hazelhurst, GA) and Leeanne Bagaoisan (Bonnaire, GA) along with freshman Carolyn Ives (Carrollton, GA). Brown won the 50 freestyle and Bagaoisan took top honors in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Ives won the 100 butterfly and set a new school record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.4. Megan Harding (Thomasville, GA) also broke her own school record in the 500 free with a time of 5:28.41. Austin Vines (Moultrie, GA) led the Men’s Team with two second-place finishes.

SGSC’s women also took first place in 4 out of 5 relays during the two-day meet. Bagaoisan, Brown, Ives, Harding, Caitlyn Meece (Kathleen, GA), Tatiana Keohan (Jacksonville, FL), and Laura Tanzey (Mauldin, SC) led the Hawk’s women in these events.

SGSC also had five swimmers complete the mile-long 1650 event this weekend. Ryan Davis (Ochlocknee, GA) and Casey Hitch (Kathleen, GA) for the Men’s Team and Harding, Rachel Fussell (Douglas, GA) and Lea Kincaid (Jacksonville, FL) for the Women’s Team all swam in the daunting event.

“Our team grew up a little this weekend by participating in a meet with a full slate of events for the first time this season,” commented Coach CM Jenkins. “Several swimmers completed their first mile-long 1650 freestyle event, and some completed their first 200 yard stroke events.”

The team will take Thanksgiving week off and return to action the first weekend in December in Savannah at the SCAD Invitational.
