Seven members of South Georgia State College’s (SGSC) men’s basketball team have been honored by the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA) for their accomplishments, both on and off the court, during the 2013-2014 season.
Jovante’ Spivey was named Newcomer of the Year and a second team All-State selection. Spivey averaged 17 points, four rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game this season. He also had 62 steals. Spivey’s points-per-game average and steals total placed him among the top 10 players in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA).
“Jovante’ had a great season. Hopefully, these honors are just a preview of what is to come for his sophomore season,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.
Ty Bull was an honorable mention selection to the All-State team. Bull averaged 9.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He grabbed a total of 242 rebounds (114 offensive, 128 defensive), which placed him among the top 10 players in the GCAA in two of the rebounding categories.
“Ty has improved so much during his time at SGSC, and this honor confirms it,” said Baldwin.
DeAndre Holmes was also an honorable mention selection. Holmes averaged 11.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists this season. Known for his three-point shooting (32.1 percent), Holmes finished among the top five players in the GCAA by making a total of 81 three-pointers.
“DeAndre shot the ball real well for us this season and deserves this honor,” Baldwin said.
Bull, Holmes, Spivey, Colin Cotter, Cody Helgeland, Daniel Peace, and TJ Rines rounded out the awards by being selected to the GABCA’s All-Academic Team. To be eligible, players must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and play in at least 60 percent of the games during the season.
“I’m proud of our All-Academic selections because it shows that these guys are true student-athletes,” said Baldwin.
The GABCA is comprised of teams from NCAA Division II and III as well as the NAIA and Junior College levels. Baldwin said coaches from 20 different colleges and universities vote on the season-ending awards across all categories.
