SGSC basketball holds off Georgia Highlands

South Georgia State College's men's basketball team managed to overcome a slow start, build a 24-point second half lead, and watch that lead almost slip away - all in one Saturday afternoon.  In the end, the Hawks survived to defeat Georgia Highlands College, 62-54.

"(Georgia Highlands) is the hottest team in our league right now," said head coach Cory Baldwin.  "They had won six games in a row before today.  I never thought we would be up by 24 points at one time and then almost blow that lead.  That just shows how good they are."

The Hawks (15-10, 8-7 GCAA) were able to keep the game close with free throws at the beginning before making their first basket with 13:43 remaining in the first half.  SGSC grabbed its first and only lead with 6:23 left before halftime and stretched it out to 24 points (48-24) in the second half.  Georgia Highlands slowly cut into the lead, outscoring the Hawks 27-9 to trail 57-51 with 52.5 seconds remaining in the game.

Jovante' Spivey had another complete game for the Hawks, finishing with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  Ty Bull and DeAndre Holmes each had eight points in the win.

The Hawks continue their current homestand Monday night, Feb. 17 against Georgia Perimeter College.  Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m.
