Students at Williams Heights Elementary School in Waycross participated recently in a tree planting project through a partnership with South Georgia State College’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Center. The project was in conjunction with recent Earth Day celebrations. Each Williams Heights student (K-5) was able to participate in three different stations – tree planting (top photo), story time (middle photo), and leaf rubbing (bottom photo). The project was coordinated by SGSC’s STEM Center Coordinator Sarah E. Braswell with leadership from SGSC’s Director of Academic Success Amber Wheeler. Braswell said the event was a success, stating, “We all loved being able to come out and share with the students something we are so passionate about.” Braswell said she is grateful for the project’s community sponsors. Jay Bennett of Ware County High School’s Future Farmers of America chapter and Dasher’s Nursery in Valdosta, Ga. donated the trees that were planted. Braswell also thanked Williams Heights Principal Staci Smallwood for allowing her students to participate. SGSC STEM Center staff and students volunteered to share their love of science and nature with the students.
