Sam Watson Named Assistant Basketball Coach At SGSC

Posted on Sep 22, 2016

Cory Baldwin, head men’s basketball coach at South Georgia State College, has announced the addition of Sam Watson as an assistant coach for the 2016-2017 season.

A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Watson played basketball at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (NCAA Division I) before transferring to Young Harris College (NCAA Division II) to finish his career.

“I am thankful to be part of the hard working and passionate basketball family at SGSC,” said Watson.

Watson is the first assistant coach hired by Baldwin in many years who has had no direct affiliation with SGSC.

“My list of former players wanting to get into college coaching had shrunk, and I knew this time I had to go outside of the SGSC family,” said Baldwin. “With Sam, I found exactly what I was looking for and what SGSC would want in an assistant coach.”

The Hawks officially begin practice for the 2016-2017 season Oct. 1 and open the season Nov. 2 against the Martinique National Team. The game will be played in the Wellness Center gymnasium on SGSC’s Douglas Campus. The first Waycross Campus home game is scheduled for Nov. 7 against Middle Georgia Prep. Tipoff for both games is set for 7 p.m.
