Jovante’ Spivey receives GCAA basketball honors
Posted on Mar 04, 2014
The coaches of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) have named South Georgia State College’s Jovante’ Spivey runner-up for Freshman of the Year and also to the GCAA’s All-Region second team.
Spivey, a 6’0” freshman from Savannah, Ga., averaged 16.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists this season for the Hawks (17-13, 10-10 GCAA). His points-per-game average placed Spivey among the top 10 players in the GCAA.
“This is a great accomplishment to be named to the second team as a freshman,” said Spivey.
Head coach Cory Baldwin praised Spivey’s improvement as a player this season and how he developed into a leader on the court.
“Spivey proved himself all year. He didn’t start at the beginning of the season but ended up being our leading scorer at the end,” said Baldwin. “We needed him on the court for us to be our best.”
Spivey is the sixth player to receive GCAA All-Region honors since SGSC’s basketball program began in 2009.
The Hawks clinched the fifth seed in the GCAA Conference Tournament, which begins today. The team will meet fourth-seed Atlanta Metro tonight in Atlanta for a 7:30 p.m. tip. If the Hawks win, they will advance to the tournament semifinals to face the winner of (1) South Georgia Tech vs. (8) Gordon State College.
Baldwin’s teams have qualified for the GCAA Tournament every season since the program earned postseason eligibility four years ago.
