Josh Mendenhall named SGSC assistant basketball coach

Posted on Oct 02, 2014

Cory Baldwin, head men’s basketball coach at South Georgia State College, has named Josh Mendenhall to the position of assistant coach for the 2014-2015 season.

A native of Greenville, S.C., Mendenhall is a 2014 graduate of Western Carolina University and a 2011 graduate of the former Waycross College, where he played for Baldwin for two seasons (2009-2011).

“Josh will be a vital piece to our team this season,” said Baldwin.  “He has been in the same spot our current players are now in and knows what it takes to succeed here and move on to be successful at the next level.”

Mendenhall played in 45 games over his two-year career at Western Carolina.  He scored a total of 76 points, grabbed 72 rebounds, and shot 44.9 percent from the floor.  He had a career-best 12 points against Furman University.  In addition, Mendenhall was part of two Southern Conference Championship games and played once in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Those who have followed Baldwin’s basketball program since its inception in 2009 will remember Mendenhall most from the 2010-2011 team that captured the GCAA Tournament Championship and a berth in the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.  Over his two-year playing career in Waycross, Mendenhall started all 66 games and is the all-time leader in rebounds (467).  He is also second all-time in points (600) and blocks (82).

Mendenhall will share the bench with fellow assistant D.J. Hardy, another former graduate who was the team’s student assistant during the 2010-2011 championship season.

“I want to thank coach Baldwin, coach Hardy, and the rest of the Hawks for the opportunity to be a part of this season and this great group of guys,” said Mendenhall.  “I worked hard for us to be GCAA Champions when I was here, and I plan to work even harder as an assistant.”

The Hawks will host two preseason games at home Oct. 21 and Oct. 29 before the regular season begins Nov. 3 at home against Middle Georgia Prep.
