Hawks Hold Off Brewton-Parker To Stay Undefeated

Posted on Dec 03, 2015

The No. 25 South Georgia State College Hawks held off the Brewton-Parker Barons Thursday night 82-72 to improve to 10-0 on the regular season.

Head Coach Cory Baldwin said Brewton-Parker’s junior varsity was initially scheduled to play, but multiple injuries forced the Barons to bring a lot of varsity players for the game.

“They brought nine varsity players with them, so this was a good test for us,” Baldwin said. “I thought the pace was a little wild at first, but we did a good job.”

The Hawks had six players finish in double digits, led by Andre Elam’s 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Karim Mawuenyega, Dunovon Robinson, and Tyrone Sam also had 12 points. Russell Keyhea and Jordan Young rounded out the top scorers with 10 points each.

“That’s probably the most balanced scoring we’ve had in a while,” said Baldwin.

The Hawks will now take their undefeated record on the road Saturday to Rome, Ga. for an early season conference showdown with No. 6 Georgia Highlands. Georgia Highlands defeated the Hawks in the GCAA Tournament Championship Game last season to advance to the NJCAA Tournament.

“Our guys have thought a lot about the last time we played them (Georgia Highlands),” Baldwin said. “We’ll definitely have our hands full Saturday.”

SGSC will return home Saturday, Dec. 12 for another conference game against Albany Tech. Tip for the Albany Tech game is set for 4 p.m.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
