Hawks Fall To No. 6 Georgia Highlands

No. 6 Georgia Highlands proved to be too much for South Georgia State Saturday afternoon as the Chargers pulled away in the second half for a 98-82 win.

The Hawks (20-8, 8-6) jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead in the first two minutes of the game before the Chargers’ defensive pressure triggered multiple runs to give them a 51-44 lead at halftime.

The Hawks got as close as 58-53 in the second half before the Chargers put together their biggest run, outscoring the Hawks 32-10 to lead 90-63 with 10 minutes remaining in the game. SGSC put together a 16-0 run of its own over the next six minutes to cut the lead to 90-79.

“If you take away three of their big runs, then it would be a totally different ballgame,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “I am very proud of our guys. They didn’t quit and got us to within 11 points late.”

Zaquavian Smith led the Hawks with 20 points, followed by Sheldon Hendrix and Shaquille Williams who had 10 points each.

The loss keeps the Hawks in fourth place in the latest Georgia Collegiate Athletic As-sociation standings. The top four teams at the end of the regular season host a first round conference tournament game.

The Hawks host Albany Tech Wednesday, March 1 in the final home game of the regu-lar season. Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
