Hawks Baseball Advances to District Championship

Posted on May 12, 2015

The South Georgia State College Hawks baseball team’s hard work at the region tournament has granted them a spot in the district championship in Morristown, Tennessee, from May 14-17, 2015.

In the region tournament, the Hawks went head-to-head with familiar opponents: they scored a win of 4-1 against Georgia Highlands, then a loss of 4-2 against Darton, followed by a win of 13-6 against West Georgia Technical College, and a loss of 19-3 against Darton to finish in second place in the region. Their second-place finish pushed the Hawks to the district tournament to play against the top 2 teams from Tennessee and the top team in Georgia.

SGSC’s head Baseball Coach Jeff Timothy says the team is poised to repeat, or even beat, their Junior College World Series run from a few years back: “This is the same situation we were in four years ago. We went into the tournament as a second seed and peaked at the right time. We ended up winning the tournament and punching a ticket to the Series. We’re excited about the opportunity to return to the tournament. This team has played their hearts out all year and I really like our chances this week,” he said.

The first game for the Hawks in the district tournament will be on Thursday, May 14, at 3:00 pm against Walters State Community College from Morristown, Tennessee. Also playing in the tournament are Darton State College from Albany, GA, and Chattanooga State Community College from Chattanooga, TN.
